The Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development.

It is a huge honour to receive a second Queen’s Award for Enterprise, this time for Sustainable Development – following the Royal recognition we received for innovation in 2018.

After more than a decade of research and development into the properties of wool, which has proven conclusively that it outperforms polluting manmade insulators, this award helps drive home the message that the use of natural materials offers a truly sustainable alternative for businesses that want to seriously address the climate challenges we all face.

Coming after the challenges of the last two years, this award also reflects the hard work and resilience of the entire Woolcool® team, as well as our valued wider family of suppliers, clients, customers and friends.

From the press book…

“Since 2009 Woolcool® has used approximately 20m Kg of coarse wool that would have gone to waste, and customers switching to Woolcool saved 40 million polystyrene boxes from landfill. Enough to stretch from Lands End to John O’Groats and back 5 times.

This is an exemplary example of an organisation that has stayed true to its beliefs for two generations and been pioneering and flexible – demonstrating genuine thought leadership and achieving strong results.”

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

It’s a real honour to carry the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. To be eligible a company must demonstrate strong corporate social responsibility alongside outstanding commercial success for a product not sold before. Woolcool® ticks all the boxes and wears this badge with pride – it’s not an easy one to achieve.

From the press book…

“Woolcool’s patent pending packaging is now being rapidly adopted by the international pharmaceutical industry. The product is sustaina- ble, ethical, utilises waste material and is completely recyclable. The combination of environmental sustainability, superior performance, and supply–chain cost reductions delivered is exemplary.”

Awarded B Corp status.

To receive certification, we had to complete the B Corp Impact Assessment, providing in depth evidence of socially and environmentally responsible practices – including energy supplies, waste and water use, worker compensation, diversity and corporate transparency. Finally, to achieve the certification, we have legally embedded our commitment to purpose beyond profit into our company articles.

As a result, we are now proud to be officially part of a community of over 3,200 businesses globally who have certified as B Corps. The B Corp community is reflective of the UK economy, with businesses of different sizes from a cross section of industries. These include well-known brands like innocent, Patagonia, Pukka Herbs, Abel & Cole, Divine, and JoJo Maman Bebe.

We decided to go for B Corp certification because it fits perfectly with our values as a company. As a result of joining B Corp, we have also signed up to support the Better Business Act campaign, find out more about this movement on their site – https://betterbusinessact.org/

How does B Corp work?

We’re proud to be one of the first UK manufacturers of packaging to earn B Corp status, and the only one in our county. We want to encourage other businesses, across all sectors and regions, to consider going for it too.

It was a rigorous and detailed process which, if anything, showed us how we can do more to live up to the B Corp commitment. By shining a light on how we work, it confirmed what we already knew – we’re far from perfect!

Certified Compostable.

Supporting Terra Carta.

FOREWORD by HRH The Prince of Wales
The interdependence between human health and planetary health has never been more clear. As we start a new decade, it is time to focus on the future we wish to build, and indeed leave, for generations to come. Humanity has made incredible progress over the past century, yet the cost of this progress has caused immense destruction to the planet that sustains us. We simply cannot maintain this course indefinitely.

Today must be the decisive moment that we make sustainability the growth story of our time, while positioning Nature as the engine of our economy. To help us succeed, and to complement global efforts across public, private and philanthropic sectors, I am calling on CEOs from around the world to engage and play their part in leading the global transition. To guarantee our future, we have no other choice but to make each day count – and it must start today.

What does our support mean?

The Terra Carta aims to provide an integrated roadmap towards an inspiring, inclusive, equitable, prosperous and sustainable future for the sake of present and future generations; one that will harness the power of Nature combined with the transformative power, innovation and resources of the private sector.

Woolcool® are fully onboard to play our small part in a global challenge.

ISO accreditation.

Woolcool® are dedicated to customer satisfaction, high standards of quality and best practice – ISO certification (The International Organisation for Standardisation) helps define how we meet the requirements of our customers and manage our impact on the wider world. The focus of the ISO standards is on consistent, measured and structured ways of working, with continually improvement at the heart of each system. Most importantly, ISO certification is achieved following regular, rigorous external audits by an accredited ISO assessor, meaning companies can have the confidence of an independent, non-biased assessment of a business’s practices. After which, the certification is only achieved if the standards are met.

Awarded ISO 9001 – Woolcool®

Why ISO 9001?

ISO 9001:2015 is focused on Quality Management Systems and Business Continuity. Using ISO 9001 helps ensure that customers get consistent, great-quality products and services, which in turn brings many business benefits.

The ISO 9001 standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. These principles are explained in more detail in ISO’s quality management principles.

Our well earned awards.

Our ethos is based on innovation, creativity, design and problem solving. These core values have meant we have heavily invested research and development and will always continue to do so. As a result, the Woolcool® team are rightly proud of our range of products, from the insulated box, to pouches, envelopes and containers that fill the facility at their Staffordshire HQ in England.

But there’s one other ‘container’ in their offices that they’re very proud of – the trophy cabinet. Since the very first year in which the company was launched, Woolcool® has been a trophy cabinet maker’s dream. We believe that awards aren’t the measure of a business, but equally are an independent means to display our serious commitment to high levels of quality, service and innovation.

Founders of the Sustainable Packaging Revolution - Woolcool®

Our process.

Woolcool® created the original sustainable insulated packaging solution. Our products are designed and manufactured in the UK. Our processes are flexible and cater for every size of demand, supplying our solutions both to the UK and overseas.

Staying true to our mantra of using natural materials to change the world, our special 100% Wool blend is sourced and processed specifically for making Woolcool®, ensuring it doesn’t contain additives, such as borate or polyester, found in other types of wool insulation. Fleeces are washed and scoured in accordance with PPC regulations, ISO14001 and ISO9001, without the need for extreme temperatures, toxic chemical treatments or additives.

The washed fleece is garneted, needle-felted and cut into strips which are hygienically sealed within recyclable PE film with microperforations to allow the hygroscopic function. With over two decades of research and development, Woolcool® are pioneers in harnessing the benefits of natural materials to create our sustainable insulated packaging range. We have heavily invested in our Innovation Centre, and are committed to do so for the future. We continue to be at the cutting edge in both our Product Development and Company Principles. We believe a business should be a force for good.

Fresh from our blog.

#LetsBoxClever

At the end of its useful life as packaging, the insulation liners or felt wool can be re-used for a variety of purposes.
